Play American Mahjong with confidence — from your very first tile to your winning hand.
Most players never get taught the part that actually wins games: which tiles to keep, and why. Try it yourself below — it takes about a minute.
You've just been dealt these 13 tiles.
Tap the ones you'd keep.
- Jokers: always keep them — you're not allowed to pass a Joker in the Charleston anyway. A Joker can stand in for any tile in a group of three or more, but never in a single or a pair.
- Pairs: keep them early. Jokers can't fill a pair, so a real pair is worth more than it looks.
- Flowers: worth holding. On the 2026 card, Flowers show up in almost half the hands.
- Lone Winds and off-suit singles: usually the first to go in the Charleston — unless you're heading for a Winds or NEWS hand.
- The Soap, the 3 Dot and the 5 Bam: it depends on the line you choose. On the 2026 card the Soap also counts as a zero in the year hands. Deciding calls like these is exactly what Module 3 teaches.
That was Lesson 3 in miniature. The full course walks you through it on the real 2026 card — plus how to read the card, play the Charleston and win more often.
Mahjong is having a moment. Game nights are popping up in living rooms, libraries and clubs all over the country — and more women are joining a table every week. This is the easiest way to take your seat, and to feel great once you're there.
Here's exactly what you get.
Video lessons for when you want to see it. A large-print Handbook for when you want to read it. A Decoder and Table Sheets for when you're actually playing.

- 7 video modules — basics, reading the card, picking your hand, the Charleston, calling & Jokers, smarter play, the 2026 card
- "Your First Night at the Table" — find a group, or host your own
- The Mahj Quiz — check you've got it before you sit down
- The Mahj Handbook — every lesson in large print
- Card Decoder 2026/27 — includes the free 2027 update, soon after the new card comes out (usually in April)
- Table Sheets — Charleston, Jokers and scoring, plus printable practice tile sheets
Every player gets stuck somewhere.
Pick yours. The Mahj Method was built to fix every one of these.
"I've never played — and I don't want to be the beginner holding up the table."
The fix: Module 1 starts with your very first tile — and step by step, the course takes you to your first full game. You'll walk in already knowing what to do.
"The card looks like hieroglyphics to me."
The fix: You don't memorize the card — you learn to read it, one line at a time. Your Card Decoder sits right next to it.
"I know the rules, but I never know which hand to go for."
The fix: A simple routine for every deal: from 13 tiles to your best 2–3 lines — and when to commit.
"The Charleston feels like a guessing game."
The fix: What to keep, what to pass, and how to read what you're being passed — including the blind pass and the courtesy pass.
"I'm always the slow one. I can feel everyone waiting."
The fix: Once you can scan the card and shortlist your hands, you keep up with the table. No more apologizing for being slow.
"I took a lesson… and forgot half of it by the next game."
The fix: Every lesson is yours forever. Rewatch any step the night before, and keep the large-print Handbook by your rack.
"I play every week — but I'm tired of handing out the winning tile."
The fix: Smarter play for experienced players: reading discards, playing defense, Joker exchanges and knowing when to switch hands.
"I played years ago. Now the card looks completely different."
The fix: A fast refresher, a full walkthrough of the 2026 card — and the 2027 Decoder free when the new card comes out.
"I don't know anyone who plays."
The fix: Learn at home on your own schedule. Then use our "First Night at the Table" guide to gather three friends and host your own game.
If even one sounds like you, this course was made for you.
It's not you. It's the way most of us were taught.
A friend explains the tiles over coffee. Someone hands you the card and says, "Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it." You watch a few videos online — each one explaining things a little differently, in a different order.
Then the tiles are dealt. Everyone starts sorting their racks. And you freeze.
The rules are the easy part. What actually decides your game are three skills — reading the card, choosing your hand and playing the Charleston — and they're the three things almost nobody teaches step by step, with the why behind every move.
So we built a course around exactly those three skills. One idea at a time. In the right order. With the "why" behind every keep, every pass and every call.
Whether you've never touched a tile or you've played every Tuesday for years, once those three skills click, everything at the table gets easier — and a lot more fun.
Three skills that change every game.
Plus the smarter-play lessons experienced players use to win more often.
Read the card — one line at a time
Learn what the colors, symbols and numbers are telling you, and every line starts to make sense. This year's card, and every card after it.
Pick the right hand from what you're dealt
Spot what you have the most of, shortlist your two or three best lines, stay flexible through the Charleston — then commit. No more picking at random and hoping.
Play the Charleston with a plan
Right, across, left — plus the blind pass and the courtesy pass that trip up almost everyone. Know what to keep, what to pass, and what your neighbors are telling you.
Then: play smarter and win more
For players who already know the game. Read the discards, stop discarding the tiles your opponents need, make the Joker exchanges others miss, and know the moment to switch to plan B.
You can. Here's what you're missing.
Free videos and apps are great for practice. Private lessons are wonderful, if you can find a teacher and the time. This is for when you want it all explained — in order, with the why, whenever it suits you.

No countdown timers. No made-up reviews. As our students share their results, you'll see them here — with their permission.
Good questions, honest answers.
I've never played. Is this really for me?
Yes. Module 1 starts with your very first tile — and one short step at a time, the course takes you to your first full game.
I already play every week. Will I learn anything?
Experienced players usually head for Modules 3, 4 and 6: picking the strongest hand, playing the Charleston with a plan, reading discards and playing defense. Skip straight to what you need.
Do I need the official card?
To play a real game, yes — this year's card from the National Mah Jongg League. Our Decoder is designed to sit right next to it and explain it section by section, in plain words. You can start the lessons before your card arrives.
Do I need my own mahjong set?
No. You can learn everything with the lessons and the printable practice tile sheets. When you're ready to play at home, any complete American set with Jokers will do.
I'm not great with technology. Will I manage?
Yes. You'll get an email with a link. Open it, enter the 6-digit code we send you, and you're in — no password. Stuck? Reply to any of our emails and a real person will help.
Can I watch on my phone, tablet or TV?
Yes, on any device with a browser. Lessons are short, captions are always on, and the tiles are big enough to see on a phone.
What happens when the card changes in April?
The way you read the card stays the same — that's what we teach. And the 2027 Decoder update is free — added to your account soon after the new card comes out (usually in April).
Is this a subscription?
No. One payment of $39 and it's yours for life. We will never charge you again.
Can I give it as a gift?
Yes. Place your order, then reply to your confirmation email with the recipient's name and email address. We'll send the access straight to them — nothing to ship, nothing to wrap.
Are you affiliated with the National Mah Jongg League?
No. Rackside is an independent learning resource. We teach you how to read and use the official card; we don't reproduce it.
At your next game night, the tiles get dealt again.
You can sit down hoping it all makes sense this time. Or you can sit down knowing how to read the card, which hand to chase and exactly what to pass — and spend the evening enjoying the game and the company.
It takes about a minute to get started — and it's yours forever.
